On July 27th, twelve members of Troop 457 traveled to New Mexico for a high adventure backpacking trip at the Philmont Scout Ranch. Philmont contains nearly 140,000 acres of wilderness that is set in the Sangre de Christa Mountains. After flying into Denver we bussed to LaJunta, Colorado which was about three hours south of Denver. In LaJunta, we had the opportunity to see Native American dances performed and spent the night in an Indian kiva. |

The next morning we were bussed to Philmont and spent the day getting ready for our adventure. During the eleven day trip, we hiked approximately 60 miles and covered elevations from about 6,000 to 11,700 feet. |

In addition, we were able to participate in programs which included environmental awareness, homesteading, rock climbing, western life, black powder rifle shooting, team building, lumberjacking, and gold mining. |

On the way back from Philmont, we toured the Kit Carson Museum, the Air Force Chapel, and ate a chuck wagon dinner at the Flying W Ranch in Colorado Springs. We arrived home tired but elated at our accomplishments. Everyone in the crew made it and earned the coveted Philmont Arrowhead patch signifying this accomplishment. Troop 457 hopes to return to Philmont in 2002. |
